INTERNATIONAL WATER DAY

MARCH 22
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. Water and sanitation are critical factors to alleviate poverty and hunger, for sustainable development, for environmental integrity, and for human health. Did you know... Every year, 1.8 million children die as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. On March 22, you are encouraged to celebrate the United Nations World Water Day. This year's theme is "Water Quality," reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management. As the global water and sanitation crisis continues, we're all encouraged to look at how we can cooperatively manage this shared resource and help those impacted on a daily basis. The biggest challenges is to ensure that the poorest people have access to clean water and safe sanitation, to help communities find sustainable ways to manage and pay for water and to develop acceptable ways of introducing safe latrines and of encouraging good hygiene practice. WHO - UNICEF says that 54% of India's population (i.e. 638 million approx) regularly defecate in the open ? ? Let us ROTARIANS make a difference.
